All users:

  1. Users need to register in the facility booking system.
  2. Before booking the equipment slots, users need to get your supervisor's approval for using the specific equipment by sumbiting the application form under Mybooking
  3. The cancellation of the booked slots can only be carried out 1 or 2 days before the time of the slots in terms of the specific equipment.
  4. The charges of using equipments goes directly to your supervisor.

FETEM users:

  • FETEM Booking table updates at 10am every Monday.
  • Max. 2 slots per day and max 4 slots per week for each PI's group.
  • You can cancel your booked slot(s) one day before the booked date.
  • Please contact Mr. Mao (65162120, chemaon@) for other query.

XPS users:

  • All XPS users should copy the XPS instruction files at E5-03-32. Please read the file of “Sample Preparation for AXIS Ultra DLD” before you send XPS samples. The detailed information of XPS are in the instruction files. If in doubts, please contact Dr. Yuan (65163778, cheyzl@).
  • At 10.00 am Every Tuesday, you can book next week slot(s).
  • Max. 2 slots per day and max 3 slots per week for each PI. If some user requires more slots, please contact Dr. Yuan for assistance.
  • You can cancel your booked slot(s) TWO day before the booked date.
  • You should send your XPS samples ONE day before your booked date, your samples must be ready before 5.00 pm. If you fail to send, the charge is still paid by your PI.
  • XPS samples must be solid, dry and free from water, compatible to Ultrahigh vacuum. If your samples damage to Vacuum Pressure gauge, your PI should pay the cost.

AFM users:

  • All AFM users should be trained. Please contact Dr. Yuan (65163778, cheyzl@) to arrange the AFM training. In general AFM training is held between 10.00-12.00 in the morning.
  • For AFM sample preparation matter, please contact Dr. Yuan (65163778, cheyzl@).
  • At 10.00 am Every Wednesday, you can book next week slot(s).
  • Max. 4 slots per day and max 4 slots per week for each PI. If some user requires more slots, please contact Dr. Yuan for assistance.
  • You can cancel your booked slot(s) one day before the booked date.

ICP-OES users:

Rules & Regulations to take note

  1. If you are a NEW user, you will require guidance for the FIRST time. As such please inform staff in-charge, Honzhen(65162197, honzhen@nus...), Allan(65166313, cheallan@nus...), Shaffiq(65162177, ashaffiq@nus...
  2. If you are the 1st user of the day, please come EARLY to prepare the machine for your run and inform staff-charge in advance.
  3. The Instrument room (E8-03-01) will be OPEN from Monday to Friday (excluding on eve of PH and PH), 9am to 5pm.
  4. Maximum 10 timeslots per user per week.
  5. Please follow proper start-up and shutdown procedure. By 5pm, you need to prepare to shut down the equipment for the day.
  6. Please record all ICP-OES usage into the RECORD BOOK provided.
  7. You will be asked to pay for any damages and repair services related to the equipment. Please handle it with utmost care!

For Sample Preparation and Analysis

  1. Strictly no using of Organic Solvent, Hydrocarbon, Solid and High viscosity samples for analysis.
  2. No sample preparations are allowed in the instrument room. Samples must be in ready-to-analyze state.
  3. Ensure that the final concentration of all acid used are < 10%.
  4. All samples must be filtered before analysis.
  5. Bring your own waste bottle along for each analysis.
  6. Please bring DI water (about 50ml or more) and Nitric acid (HNO3) about 10ml or more at 2-10% concentration for flushing of the ICP-OES at the end of the analysis.
  7. Please prepared all samples at least 10ml or more and bring your own test-tube rack.
  8. Please seek assistance from staff in-charge if tubing is choke.

XRD users:

  • MAXIMUM 3 TIMESLOTS PER LAB GROUP PER WEEK
  • SAMPLES MUST BE RETRIEVED AT THE END OF TIMESLOT
  • If you are a NEW user, you will require guidance for the first time. Please inform Jamie (6516 8034, cheswc@)
  • Samples are scanned according to user-defined settings, and charges are by a duration basis. For the typical 5˚ to 80˚ Theta-2Theta scan, the default scan takes about 30 minutes for each sample.
  • Dept XRD equipment is set up for dry powder analysis. Before coming down for scanning your samples, please prepare/grind your samples into a fine dry powder form.
  • You also need to highlight in advance any particular issues with your samples; e.g. toxicity; if it is a non-powder sample; etc
  • Dept XRD Holder is PMMA & cleaning the holder with water or soap.
  • The analysis will provide you with data on the crystalline planes found from scanning the sample.
  • The software with our Bruker system uses the PDF2 database, which you can make use of to verify your scan data.
  • You may also convert the scan data to match it with any external software or database you have access to (e.g. JCPDS. You may wish to take note of the data ID of the compound you wish to correlate with.)

Changes for October 2022 Trial Run (starts 03rd Oct – 24th Oct)

  • FESEM Booking table updates at 10am every Monday.
  • Max. 3 slots per day and max 3 slots per week for each PI's group.
  • At 10am on next day Tuesday, the limit increases to 5 slots
  • Max. 5 slots per day and max 5 slots per week for each PI's group.
  • At 10am on next day Wednesday, the limit increases to 8 slots
  • Max. 8 slots per day and max 8 slots per week for each PI's group.
  • Booking is subjct to available of timeslots

TEM users:

  • TEM (JEM-2010) is located in E5 03-38
  • TEM is used on base of the slot allocation
  • If you need fixed time slots for TEM every week, please contact with Mr Mao at 62120 or chemaon@
  • One slot is 1.5 hour.
